Ruth Steinberg '72

Ruth SteinbergRuth Steinberg '72 chose Barnard because it taught her to question assumptions, to use research to find factual evidence, to strongly voice well-researched opinions, to engage in dialogue, and to listen to others. She believes that the Barnard experience encourages and forms strong, outspoken leaders. Outside the classroom, Ruth became the first Barnard bartender, and earned extra money bartending and catering. Barnard opened up New York City to her and made her a lifelong lover and supporter of the arts—a love that has sustained her throughout her life. Ruth cherishes the friends she met while at Barnard and is still in close touch with them to this day.

Barnard is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated need for all students. Maintaining that, and continuing to attract and support the best applicants, is a very expensive, though worthy, endeavor that requires a great deal of financial support from alumnae. In gratitude for the wonderful education and experiences that Barnard gave her, Ruth started giving back and volunteering as a Class Agent years ago. In recent years, she decided to deepen her commitment by making a legacy gift to the College. Through a gift in her will to Barnard, Ruth will provide future support to help the College meet its needs and priorities so that it can help the next generation of Barnard women to flourish.
