An Example of How It Works

Joanna decided to make a gift to Barnard in her mother's name using appreciated securities. Not only will her mother's legacy live on at Barnard thanks to the gift, but Joanna also qualified for a federal income tax charitable deduction and eliminated capital gains tax on the securities.
