"As I entered my 60s, I began to think more about leaving a legacy. When I moved back to New York in 2008, I spent more time at the College and attended Barnard Reunions, and was inspired by today's students and the work they are doing in many fields. I was also inspired by the quality of Barnard's leadership. After assessing my personal circumstances, I decided this was a simple way to give and to make a commitment to Barnard for future generations. Barnard students and faculty do work that is changing the world. One planned gift can have an impact in many areas."

"I received the October 2019 planned giving letter from Joanne Chertok '75 and a light bulb went off. I saw my classmates, whom I admire and respect, listed as members of the Athena Society and realized, "why had I not thought of this before for myself?" I recommend planned giving to my clients on a regular basis and it was time I took my own advice. An IRA [Individual Retirement Account] is the perfect vehicle to use, as Barnard can receive income tax-free, even though my heirs cannot.

I am inspired by the pleasure of giving and I feel happier afterwards. And I can't wait to do it again."
